Syrian army capable of squashing terrorism, minister says

Baku-APA. The Syrian army forces are capable of squashing terrorism and terrorists in all their shapes and colors, Syria’s Minister of Defense Gen. Fahd Jassem al-Freij said Saturday, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

Speaking to the state-TV, Freij said the Syrian soldiers have proven that they are Syria’s loyal strong men.

Freij also pointed out that Syria’s friends are more determined to prevent the unilateral decision making, in reference to the U.S. hegemony on international resolutions.

The minister’s remarks has come as Syria is commemorating the 39th anniversary of the 1973 Arab-Israeli war, known as the October war, which began on Oct. 6 when Egypt and Syria took advantage of the Jewish Yom Kippur holiday to launch surprise attacks on territory occupied by Israel in previous conflicts.

Israeli forces halted the Arab advance and regained most of the lost territory. The three-week war ended with a truce that ultimately led to the return of Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula and a 1979 peace treaty between Egypt and Israel.

Earlier in the day, the state-run SANA news agency said in a commentary that the Syrian army is achieving "overwhelming victories" by eliminating the "mercenaries of the Wahhabis and Zionists."

"There are little differences between the current aggression and the circumstances during the October War, as Syria is facing an enemy armed with western and Israeli weapons aiming at destroying the Syrian state and punish its people for foiling all the hegemonic and hostile schemes planned for the region," SANA said.

"The total faith in the ability of the Syrian army to achieve victory and destroy terrorism and Wahhabi-Zionist calls is enhanced by the unity of the Syrians, who stand firm in the face of challenges and economic sanctions imposed on them in an attempt to undermine their commitment to their homeland," according to SANA.
