APEC ministers pledge to facilitate economic integration: Lavrov

Baku-APA.Ministers from 21 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) member economies committed to furthering regional economic integration, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Thursday, APA report quoting Xinhua.

As co-chairman of the two-day APEC Ministerial Meeting, Lavrov told reporters all the representatives agreed integration was the main tool toward a free and open trade system.

Ministers had signed a joint declaration on facilitating trade and investment liberalization and regional economic integration, strengthening food security, establishing reliable supply chains, and intensifying cooperation to foster innovative growth, Lavrov said.

They also voiced support for the liberalization of trade and investment, the rejection of protectionism and the creation of an APEC Policy Partnership in Science, Technology and Innovation and a single educational space in the APEC region, he said.

"We greatly appreciate the outcomes of the work of the forum in 2012. Everyone believes that we managed to preserve continuity in APEC’s work and at the same time give additional impetus to that work," the diplomat said.

"I’m convinced that full integration efforts in the Eurasian, Asia-Pacific space will be beneficial for those regions," he said.

Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu and Assistant Commerce Minister Yu Jianhua attended the meeting.

The ministerial meeting will make final preparations for the informal APEC leaders’ meeting at the weekend.
