Syrian interior minister stresses resolve to counter terrorism

Baku-APA. Syrian interior minister stressed Thursday his country’s resolve to counter terrorism "wherever located in the country" during a meeting with visiting UN under- secretary-general for safety and security, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

Interior Minister Mohammad al-Shaar’s discussed the Syrian crisis with UN Under-Secretary-General for Safety and Security Gregory B. Starr, according to state-run SANA news agency.

During the meeting, Shaar stressed that the Syrian leadership will not waver in fighting terrorism and restore security and stability to the unrest-hit country.

"As a state, we are committed to protect our people from those killers that are committing homicide, kidnapping and robbery," Shaar said, stressing that Syria is capable of achieving that goal.

The minister also stressed that Syria supports any intuitive that aims to achieve security and stability for Syria, adding that Syria is still committed to the six-point peace plan brokered by special joint envoy Kofi Annan.

Shaar also stressed that the Syrian government will spare no effort to provide protection for the UN offices in Syria and their staff as well.

For his part, Starr voiced hopes that Syria will restore its security and stability, saying that he understands the recent situation and the existence of criminal elements that are damaging the security of the country, according to SANA.

Starr also noted that he came to Syria to help the ground team in their mission to distribute aid to the people in need.
