400,000 affected by Typhoon Vicente in Guangxi

Baku-APA. Typhoon Vicente triggered rainstorms and had affected more than 400,000 people in south China’s Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, local authorities said Thursday, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

Vicente, this year’s eighth typhoon, made landfall near the city of Taishan in neighboring province of Guangdong early Tuesday, bringing gales and rainstorms to some southern provinces.

Torrential rains battered 34 counties in 11 cities in Guangxi, including the cities of Nanning, Liuzhou, Yulin, Wuzhou and Beihai, according to the region’s civil affairs department.

The storm has toppled more than 1,866 houses and damaged 18,690 hectares of crops. Direct economic losses totaled 92.1 million yuan (14.4 million U.S. dollars), the department said.

Though Typhoon Vicente is moving away, local meteorological authorities in Guangxi said heavy downpours could continue into Friday.

In neighboring Guizhou province, a new round of rainstorms has left four people dead and affected more than 380,000 residents from 18 counties in six cities since July 21.

The heavy rain has destroyed more than 400 houses, damaged 17,800 hectares of cropland and forced 24,000 local residents to relocate in Guizhou, causing direct economic losses of 130 million yuan.
