Baku – APA. Two former police officers were jailed Thursday for up to five years for their roles in a mine accident that killed 277 people in north China in 2008, APA reports quoting “Xinhuanet”.
At the Fangshan District People’s Court in Beijing, Han Chunxi, 39, former police head of Xiangfen County, in Linfen City of Shanxi Province, was sentenced to five years in prison for taking 40,000 yuan (5,855 U.S. dollars) in bribes in 2006 and 2007 from a former head of a company that ran the ill-fated iron ore dump.
The unlicensed iron ore dump collapsed on Sept. 8, 2008, in Xiangfen and triggered a massive landslide, which devastated an outdoor market, a village and an office building.
Han ordered his subordinates, including Cheng Xiangmin, to halt inspections of the company’s mine in January 2008 and abetted its illegal use of explosives, which eventually led to the tragedy.
The court also ruled Cheng Xiangmin, 37, to three years in jail for dereliction of duty.
The company, which illicitly used explosives, devastated iron reserves worth more than 100 million yuan (14.6 million U.S. dollars), according to the Shanxi Provincial Department of Land and Resources.
