Baku-APA. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon on Tuesday congratulated Irina Bokova on her re-election as director-general of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), APA reports quoting AP.
"The secretary-general is writing to the director-general to congratulate her and to say that he looks forward to continuing to work together on many topics, including the Global Education for All initiative and on developing the post-2015 development agenda, " UN spokesperson Martin Nesirky said at a daily news briefing.
"In her first term, she focused UNESCO's programme on two overarching objectives: forging a culture of peace and promoting sustainable development," Nesirky said.
Bokova was elected for a second four-year term at the 37th session of the General Conference of UNESCO in Paris on Tuesday.
Born on July 12, 1952 in the Bulgarian capital of Sofia, Bokova was Bulgaria's ambassador to France and Monaco, the Bulgarian foreign minister, and a member of the UNESCO Executive Board since 2007. She was first elected director-general of UNESCO in 2009 and the first woman to have held the post.
UNESCO, created in 1946, works to create the conditions for dialogue among civilizations, cultures and peoples, based upon respect for commonly shared values, and geared toward sustainable development, a culture of peace, observance of human rights and the alleviation of poverty.
