Democratic senators have introduced a bill in the upper chamber of the U.S. Congress that would ban the printing of banknotes and minting of coins featuring the images of living U.S. presidents, APA reports.
The bill was authored by Jeff Merkley (D-Oregon) and Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nevada). The text of their proposed legislation fits on just one page and takes up just a few lines. It prohibits the issuance of "U.S. currency bearing an image resembling a living or sitting president."
According to Merkley's statement, the bill would prevent US President Donald Trump from issuing a new series of one-dollar coins featuring his image. This issue was planned for the 250th anniversary of the United States (celebrated on July 4, 2026).
"While monarchs put their faces on coins, America has never had and never will have a king," Masto noted.
There is no precedent in US history for issuing coins or banknotes featuring living presidents.
