US President Donald Trump announced that he has approved a plan to build two new battleships for the US Navy, APA reports.
"I'm honored to announce that I've approved a plan for the Navy to build two brand-new, very large battleships, the largest we've ever built," he said, speaking to reporters at his Mar-a-Lago estate near West Palm Beach, Florida. "There's nothing like these ships," the American leader asserted. He envisioned them as the "fastest, largest" American ships. "We'll start with two [ships], but they'll quickly grow to 10. And ultimately, we think there will be 20 to 25," he noted. Trump did not specify how long this program would last. He noted that the ships' displacement would exceed 30,000 to 40,000 tons.
"The battleships will be armed with the highest-grade artillery and missiles. They will also carry hypersonic weapons, many of the latest hypersonic weapons, electric railguns, and even powerful lasers," Trump added. "They will also carry nuclear-capable sea-launched cruise missiles, which are currently under development," the American leader emphasized.
Speaking about aircraft carrier construction, Trump added, "We'll be ramping that up as well." He said this could include "a different class of aircraft carrier" than the Gerald R. Ford. Furthermore, the US plans to build 12 to 15 new submarines to strengthen the Navy.
"We're at least 15 years ahead of any competitor. China, Russia, no one can match us. We're also currently building three large aircraft carriers in addition to the ones we already have. And, interestingly, we have a lot of submarines," Trump said.
"How many submarines do we have now? We have more than 30. But these are super-duper submarines, and they have no equal. So we are going to build 12 to 15 completely new submarines," the US president added.
