Seven people were killed Thursday in the crash of a Cessna 550 business jet in Statesville, North Carolina, including former NASCAR driver Greg Biffle, NASCAR said, APA reports citing Reuters.
The plane crashed at the Statesville Regional Airport in North Carolina.
The North Carolina Highway Patrol said it is believed that Biffle and members of his immediate family were among those killed but because of a severe post-crash fire a formal confirmation has not been completed. The plane was registered to a company tied to Biffle.
Officials will provide a list of the seven occupants once confirmation has been made by the medical examiner’s office.
The plane had been bound for Florida but soon after takeoff attempted to return to the North Carolina airport in severe weather around 10:15 a.m. (1515 GMT) according to FlightAware, an airplane tracking site.

A plane has crashed at a North Carolina airport, reportedly leaving multiple people dead, APA reports citing The Independent.
The plane crashed around 10:15 a.m. Thursday, while landing at the Statesville Regional Airport, according to a statement from airport officials. Public records indicate the plane was owned by GB Aviation Leasing, which is owned by the former NASCAR star Greg Biffle, WCNC reports.
There were multiple fatalities, but the exact number is still unknown, police told CNN. Officials have yet to confirm who owned the plane and who was on board.
It’s also unclear how many people were on board the plane, which was a Cessna C550 jet, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
The city-owned airport, which is located about 50 miles north of Charlotte, provides “corporate aviation facilities for Fortune 500 companies and several NASCAR teams,” according to its website.
