Canadian authorities have considered a scenario involving possible military intervention by the United States over the past year but assessed the likelihood of such a development as very low, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said in an interview with The New York Times.
According to him, the issue was considered as part of a risk assessment against the backdrop of previous statements by US President Donald Trump about Canada becoming the 51st state of the United States.
“This is not the central scenario, but it would be irresponsible not to prepare for it,” Carney said.
The prime minister also noted that Canada wants to reduce its military’s dependence on the US Starlink satellite communications system. According to him, Ottawa plans to expand cooperation with European countries and South Korea in this area.
