Baku-APA. Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter left a hospital in Cleveland, Ohio, Thursday after staying there for two days for stomach problems, APA reports quoting news.xinhuanet.com website.

Eileen Korey, spokeswoman for MetroHealth Medical Center, said the former president left the hospital at 1:15 p.m. local time Thursday.

Carter’s spokeswoman Deanna Congileo said the ex-president was headed to Washington, D.C. to attend a scheduled meeting.

The 85-year-old former president fell ill on his flight from Atlanta to Cleveland Tuesday and was transferred to the hospital after paramedics met his plane upon its arrival. Doctors said he probably suffered a viral infection which caused his stomach problems.

Carter flew to the city on a Delta flight to attend book- signing events for his new book, "White House Diary." The illness forced him to cancel all book-signing plans in Ohio, North Carolina, Washington and South Carolina.

Carter served as the 39th president of the United States from 1977 to 1981 and was the recipient of the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize, the only U.S. president to have received the prize after leaving office.

After leaving office, Carter remains active on many issues. He has traveled extensively to conduct peace negotiations, observe elections, and advance disease prevention and eradication in developing nations.
