U.S. to shelve missile defense plans in Czech Republic

Washington – APA. U.S. President Barack Obama informed Prime Minister of the Czech Republic Jan Fischer in a telephone call that his administration has decided to pull out from the plan missile defense shield installations in the Czech Republic and Poland, diplomatic sources said, APA reports. Spokesman for the Prime Minister confirmed reports on the telephone conversation between Obama and Fischer, but didn’t give details. He said the Prime Minister informed President Vaslav Claus about his phone conversation with the U.S. President. The Wall Street Journal also reported about the U.S. plans to shelve missile defense installations in the Eastern Europe. Diplomatic sources told The Wall Street Journal that U.S. administration will review assessment of Iran’s nuclear threat. U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates will hold press conference on the issue on Thursday. He will meet with his Czech counterpart Martin Bartak on Friday. U.S. State Department officials are also expected to visit Prague tomorrow.
