Baku. Viktoria Dementieva – APA. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland has assumed the presidency of the UN Security Council, APA reports quoting the UN news site. The UK assumed the presidency of the UN Security Council (UNSC), which is charged with the maintenance of international peace and security, from August 1.

The Presidency rotates monthly in alphabetical order of the Security Council member nations’ names in English. There are 15 members of the Security Council, consisting of permanent members and elected members. Permanent members are China, France, Russia, UK and US. Ten other members are elected by the General Assembly for two-year terms starting on 1 January, with five replaced each year.

The Security Council is the only organ of the UN, the resolutions of which are binding.
