Nigerian president to attend AU security meeting in Kenya

Baku-APA. Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan will travel to the Kenyan capital of Nairobi on Monday to join other African leaders for a security meeting of the African Union (AU), the presidential office said, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

The meeting of the AU's Peace and Security Council, scheduled for Tuesday, is a follow-up to talks by African leaders in Pretoria, South Africa in May on joint actions against terrorism, the presidential office said in a statement.

Participants will receive a report submitted by the chairperson of the Commission on Terrorism and Violent Extremism in Africa, the statement said.

It added that during the meeting, Jonathan and heads of state of other African nations will deliberate on and adopt the report.

"The deliberations are expected to lead to more collaborative actions by Nigeria and other African countries, in an effort to rid the continent of acts of terrorism and violent extremism," the statement said.

Nigeria is currently facing serious internal security challenges like the Boko Haram insurgency in the northeastern states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa.
