UN secretary-general to arrive in Khartoum Friday

Baku-APA. United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is expected to arrive in Khartoum on Friday, to hold talks with Sudanese officials on the outstanding issues between north and south Sudan, the official SUNA news agency reported Wednesday, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

SUNA said Ban Ki-moon’s talks in Khartoum would focus on progress in the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) and the issues of difference between north and south Sudan, including the dispute over Abyei.

The UN secretary-general would then leave to Juba, the capital of South Sudan, to participate in the declaration of South Sudan’s independence.

On July 9, South Sudan would officially declare its independence according to the results of the referendum on self- determination for South Sudan, conducted on Jan. 9, 2011, during which more than 98 percent of the southerners voted for separation.

Many issues are still outstanding between north and south Sudan, including oil, border demarcation, external debts and the Abyei region.
