Baku-APA. Egypt’s official news agency says Christians and Muslims have clashed in western Cairo after reports of a mixed romance. A medical official says two people were killed, APA reports quoting news.yahoo.com website.
The clashes mark an escalation in tension between Egypt’s Muslims and the country’s Coptic Christian minority. Ultraconservative Muslims have held regular protests in recent days accusing the church of abducting the wife of a Coptic priest who they believe converted to Islam.
The news agency says the violence Saturday broke out in the Imbaba neighborhood after reports that a Christian woman who married a Muslim was being held in a church against her will.
The medical official said that besides the dead, 18 people were injured. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to speak to reporters.
