Baku-APA. Visiting Egyptian Caretaker Prime Minister Essam Sharaf said Tuesday that Egypt backs members of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), vowing that an improvement in relations with Iran would not undermine Gulf security, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

Sharaf said in a statement after meeting with Kuwait’s Parliament Speaker Jassem Al-Kharafi that Egypt considers the security of the Gulf as of great significance and a red line that must not be crossed.

He said his current tour of the region was aimed at affirming robust support for these countries.

Sharaf also said Cairo’s plans to open a new chapter in ties with Iran would not affect its relations with Gulf countries.

Sharaf’s first Gulf tour included Kuwait, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. He said he would visit the other three members namely, the United Arab Emirates, Oman and Bahrain in his next Gulf trip.

The trip was aimed at attracting investment from oil-rich Gulf after Egypt faces a sharp decline in economic growth due to the political turmoil earlier this year.
