Baku – APA. An influential youth leader and staunch supporter of Ivory Coast’s former leader Laurent Gbagbo has been arrested, French media said on Friday, APA reports quoting “Reuters”.
A government spokesman said he could not confirm the report.
Radio France International and other French media said Charles Ble Goude, the firebrand head of the "Young Patriots" movement, had been detained, without giving more details.
Patrick Achi, a spokesman for President Alassane Ouattara, Gbagbo’s rival, said in a text message to Reuters: "It is not confirmed. We don’t know."
Ble Goude is accused of inciting attacks on civilians, foreigners and U.N. peacekeepers in the West African country. He was also Gbagbo’s youth minister and has been targeted by U.N. and EU sanctions.
Gbagbo was arrested on Monday after weeks of fighting in the world’s top cocoa-producing country provoked by his refusal to relinquish power after a November presidential election won by Ouattara, according to the U.N.-certified results.
