Baku-APA. At least eight people were killed Saturday due to intense shelling on the rebellious town of Hamorieh in the countryside of the capital Damascus, activists said, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights accused the government troops of shelling in al-Hamorieh. Yet, the activists' report couldn't be verified independently.

On Saturday, other rebellious suburbs in eastern Damascus have also witnessed intense fighting between government troops and armed rebels, who have stepped up their operations in the hope of creating inroads to the heavily-fortified capital.

The clashes also focused in Damascus' district of Barzeh, according to activists' reports.

The report came at a time as the rebel Free Syrian Army (FSA) was threatening of carrying out "qualitative" operations in the capital Damascus in response to what its leaders said "the regime brutality."

The rebels have apparently received the long-awaited arms shipments they were promised to get by some pro-government Western and Arab powers, including the United States, Qatar and Saudi Arabia, reports said.

The United Nations said recently that more than 100,000 people had been killed in Syria's 28-month crisis, with about 1.7 million forced to seek refuge in neighboring countries.
