“Housing issues must stand at the center of sustainable development,” United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres said in a video address to participants of the opening ceremony of the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13), APA reports.
The UN Secretary-General stated that the 10-year review of the New Urban Agenda is an important milestone, and during this period the main focus should be on expanding access to safe, accessible and affordable housing.
“Housing is a human right and a fundamental element of human dignity. The World Urban Forum must serve as a catalyst for making it a shared reality for all,” Guterres emphasized.
He noted that the transformation of informal settlements and slums, as well as the elimination of inequalities that increase social tensions, should become a global priority.
In his speech, the UN Secretary-General called on the international community to act jointly: “Together, we can provide housing for the world and leave no one behind.”
