The role of parliaments is of decisive importance for transforming global housing commitments into real results, Rania Hedaya, Director of the Regional Office for Arab States of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), said during the roundtable titled “Parliamentarians: Translating Urban Commitments into National Action – The Parliamentary Path to Housing for All” held within the framework of WUF13, APA-Economics reports.
According to her, members of parliament are not only legislators, but also serve as a bridge between global goals and the needs of local communities.
Rania Hedaya noted that parliamentarians play an important role in making decisions on housing policy, urban planning, climate action, public investment and financing mechanisms, as well as overseeing their implementation.
She stated that the housing crisis cannot be solved separately and that coordinated action is required among all levels of governance and various sectors of society in this field.
The UN-Habitat official stressed that the recommendations voiced during the roundtable will contribute to discussions on the implementation of the New Urban Agenda, the execution of Sustainable Development Goal 11 and international policy discussions on adequate housing.
