“Different approaches are needed to study and understand various spaces related to informal settlements,” Robert Ndugwa, a representative of UN-Habitat, said during the event titled “Transforming Informal Settlements: Data, Standards and Practice — UN-Habitat Arena” held within the framework of WUF13, APA reports.
“As UN-Habitat, we are coordinating with numerous partners. We have now formed an initial understanding regarding the strategy we can apply. One of these, of course, relates more to the preliminary and strategic level. We are working on creating baseline data layers based on the analysis of low-quality imagery, which can help us understand the overall situation and achieve certain results at lower cost. Naturally, this requires a higher level of harmonization of our various parameters and measurement methods,” Robert Ndugwa noted.
According to him, they are mainly trying to identify the characteristics and problems existing at the national level.
Robert Ndugwa added that the situation at the neighborhood and community levels is also being studied:
“For example, it is possible to harmonize maps of certain spaces and informal settlement areas and analyze them across different layers. In some cases, this may require the use of very high-quality databases,” Robert Ndugwa said.
