Housing policy should not be limited only to handing over house keys to families, UN-Habitat Regional Goodwill Ambassador for the Arab States, Princess Lamia bint Majed Al Saud, said during an event organized on the third day of the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13), APA reports.
According to her, the main goal is to ensure the full integration of people into economic and social life.
It was noted during the speech that urbanization will accelerate even further in the coming years, placing an additional financial burden on governments.
“By 2030, 60 percent of the world’s population is expected to live in cities. In this case, is it possible to expect that all needs will be met only by governments? This requires a completely different scale of global budget,” the ambassador said.
The speaker emphasized that creating opportunities for people to earn their own income and rent or own homes is a more sustainable approach:
“When you create opportunities for people to earn their own income and participate in the process of renting or purchasing housing, this is actually the essence of dignity and stability.”
The speech also highlighted the importance of a trilateral cooperation model for the successful implementation of housing projects. The princess stated that the foundation she leads uses a “triple formula” in all projects:
“First, governments for policy formation and the sustainability of projects. Second, international organizations that provide the technical framework. Third, charitable institutions that provide innovation, vision, and financial support.”
According to the speaker, housing projects are not only about four walls, but about building an entire social system:
“In the end, you are not simply creating four or five walls to hand over to families — you are building a complete system.”
She stressed that housing policy requires a strategic approach in terms of social sustainability, human dignity, and inclusive development.
