“We spent one year clearing mines and opening a corridor in order to establish electrical systems. Because electricity was very important infrastructure," Emin Huseynov, Special Representative of the President in Aghdam, Fuzuli, and Khojavend districts, said at the event titled “From Urbicide to Revival: Sustainable Reconstruction, Resettlement and Development in Azerbaijan’s Liberated Territories” held within the framework of WUF13, APA reports.

He stated that the mine problem is a fundamental threat that will continue for many years: “The reality is that we will have to find ways to live with mines for a long time. We must always keep people’s safety as a priority.”

Emin Huseynov also touched upon examples of urbicide related to cultural heritage: “Although the Aghdam Juma Mosque was not completely destroyed, it had been seriously desecrated. Pigs and cows had been kept inside the mosque. There were bullet marks and insulting writings on the walls. Yet this place is considered a sacred religious monument for our people. After restoration work, the mosque regained its former appearance. Another important example is the Imarat Complex. During the occupation, this area was also subjected to vandalism, and some of the mausoleums were destroyed. It is believed that Panah Ali Khan, his children and other members of his lineage are buried here. Currently, the area has been restored and functions as a museum. This demonstrates how much importance Azerbaijan attaches to preserving cultural heritage.”

The special representative noted that if anyone is looking for an example to demonstrate what urbicide is, Aghdam is the clearest example of it: “When the city was liberated from occupation, it was called the ‘Hiroshima of the Caucasus’ and the ‘Ghost City.’ Within five years, Aghdam has begun to gain a completely new image and is being reborn from its ashes like the phoenix.”
