The city of Baku, a symbol of history and modern development, is a suitable venue for discussing the future of sustainable cities, Slovak Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Environment Tomáš Taraba said during his speech at the opening ceremony of WUF13, APA reports.
He stated that cities are not only centers of development, but also critical infrastructure systems that must be protected and maintained sustainably.
The minister emphasized that Slovakia strongly supports the urbanization and sustainable urban resilience initiative of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme: “We view this initiative as a practical and results-oriented platform.”
Tomáš Taraba noted that Slovakia is not limiting itself to political support alone, but is also ready to share expertise and participate in the implementation of concrete projects.
The speech also particularly highlighted the impact of military conflicts on cities. “Many cities around the world are facing the consequences of military conflicts. Infrastructure is being destroyed, essential services are disrupted, and people are becoming internally displaced,” he noted.
According to him, the main issue is not only reconstruction, but ensuring long-term urban recovery, and Slovakia is ready to provide support in this process as well.
The Slovak Deputy Prime Minister stated that modernization of the housing stock is one of the main priorities in his country. It was noted that 55 percent of households in Slovakia live in private homes, a significant portion of which are old buildings.
“Our goal is to reduce people’s living costs as much as possible,” he stressed.
In conclusion, Tomáš Taraba stated that Slovakia has special expertise in the field of water resource management and is ready to cooperate with other countries in this area.
