“We must prepare the cities of the future in a way that is adapted to aging populations,” Executive Director of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) Anacláudia Rossbach said during a roundtable on the rights of older persons titled “Housing Across the Lifespan – Adequate Housing for All Older Persons,” organized within the framework of the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) held in Baku, APA reports.

“In Japan, as well as in many cities across Europe — including Spain, Italy, and other countries — some small towns are becoming deserted, as young people no longer want to live there. As a result, older people become isolated, while empty houses and unused residential spaces emerge. On one side there is a housing shortage, and on the other side there are empty homes,” she noted.

Rossbach stressed the importance of how housing, communities, and public spaces are designed, emphasizing that people’s needs must be taken into account.

“People want to live in cities, use open public spaces, engage in social interaction, and have easy access to shops and healthcare services. These require proper planning.

This field has not yet fully developed, but it is becoming an increasingly established direction. Many countries and cities are already preparing for these changes, although at the same time many places still face difficulties,” she said.
