International media coverage of the restoration and reconstruction works carried out in Karabakh and East Zangazur has contributed to increasing global attention to the humanitarian challenges in the region, Rizvan Nabiyev, member of the Milli Majlis and member of the Supervisory Board of the Agency for State Support to Non-Governmental Organizations of the Republic of Azerbaijan, said during the media briefing titled “Media as a Driver of Public Discourse on Housing and Urban Resilience” held within the framework of WUF13, APA-Economics reports.
He stated that although Azerbaijani journalists were unable to visit those territories during the occupation period, international media conveyed facts such as the destruction of the Aghdam mosque and the description of Aghdam as the “Hiroshima of the Caucasus” to the global public.
According to Rizvan Nabiyev, the media has played an important role in promoting internationally the processes of mine clearance, environmental restoration, preservation of cultural heritage, and reintegration of former internally displaced persons in Karabakh and East Zangazur.
He noted that approximately 30% of Azerbaijan’s territory remains contaminated with mines and unexploded ordnance, while more than 1.5 million mines and explosive devices continue to be among the region’s main problems.
The MP added that thousands of former internally displaced persons have already returned to the liberated territories, and the restoration of more than 200 settlements is planned over the next decade.
Rizvan Nabiyev emphasized that the future of sustainable cities depends not only on physical infrastructure, but also on information infrastructure and the quality of public dialogue.
