Baku, while being a city of the ancient Silk Road, has today become a symbol of modern development and the future on the shores of the Caspian Sea, President of the UN-Habitat Assembly from Malaysia, Nga Kor Ming, said during his speech at the opening ceremony of the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13), APA reports.

Nga Kor Ming noted that the discussions held within the framework of WUF13 are of particular importance in terms of addressing global urbanization and housing issues: “Providing housing for the world and building safe and sustainable cities is not just a slogan, but an urgent call for action.”

He stated that, according to data from the United Nations Human Settlements Programme, around 2.9 billion people worldwide currently suffer from the housing crisis, and one in every four people lives in informal settlements.

The Assembly president emphasized that WUF13 is not only a discussion platform, but also creates an important opportunity for strengthening multilateral cooperation in implementing the New Urban Agenda and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

According to him, every decision adopted and every partnership established within the framework of WUF13 should serve the formation of more sustainable and inclusive cities.
