The successful hosting of COP29 in Baku once again demonstrated Azerbaijan’s commitment to international climate cooperation and practical climate action, Mukhtar Babayev, Representative of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan on Climate Issues, said during his speech at the event titled “Development of Azerbaijan’s First National Sustainability Standard: Sustainable Practices Standard (SPS)” organized within the framework of WUF13 in Baku, APA reports.

During his speech, Mukhtar Babayev stated that cities are currently facing climate risks.

He noted that due to climate change, cities are increasingly facing floods, heatwaves, droughts, hurricanes and infrastructure problems:

“These challenges are no longer the reality of the future, but the reality of today. They directly affect the global economy, public health and the daily lives of millions of people.”

Mukhtar Babayev emphasized that the implementation of sustainable practices transforms the concept of sustainability from theory into practical action, ensures more efficient use of resources and increases accountability.

He also described the development of Azerbaijan’s first national sustainability standard as an important step:

“Sustainable development should not be limited only to strategies and declarations, but should be integrated into planning processes and daily institutional activities.”
