Within the framework of the 13th Session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13), one of the most prestigious events of the United Nations hosted by Azerbaijan, the ANAMA organized a side event titled “Post-Conflict Urban Reconstruction: The Important Role of Humanitarian Demining,” APA reports.

The side event organized at the Azerbaijan pavilion brought together representatives of state institutions and international organizations in order to draw the attention of the international community to the mine problem faced by Azerbaijan, emphasize the impact of the mine threat on the restoration and reconstruction process, as well as discuss global cooperation and restoration experiences in the field of demining.

Delivering the opening speech at the event, Chairman of ANAMA’s Board Vugar Suleymanov stated that demining is not only a humanitarian activity that saves people’s lives, but also the main foundation of restoration and reconstruction. This activity creates the necessary conditions for rebuilding residential houses, restoring infrastructure, reviving agriculture, developing transport networks and revitalizing economic activity.

Within the framework of the “Great Return” Program, demining activities have been fully integrated into urban planning, reconstruction and development processes.

He emphasized that the mine threat not only in Azerbaijan, but also in several countries around the world, slows down restoration processes, limits development opportunities and keeps the safety of the population at risk. That is why today’s platform is of particular importance. Eliminating the mine problem is not limited only to national efforts, but requires sustainable international support, partnership, innovative approaches and the sharing of best practices.

The panel discussions moderated by Deputy Chairman of the Public Council under ANAMA Emil Hasanov were attended by Deputy Chairman of ANAMA’s Board Samir Poladov, Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Azerbaijan Marijana Kujundzic, professor at ADA University and former Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Mexico to Azerbaijan Rodrigo Labardini, and Head of the Project Management Department of the State Committee on Urban Planning and Architecture Ramil Jahangirov.

Panel discussions were held on demining activities and Azerbaijan’s experience, which form the basis of urban reconstruction, international cooperation to support restoration and reconstruction in the post-conflict period, as well as urban planning and reconstruction in mine-cleared areas.

The side event highlighted the strategic importance of humanitarian demining in rebuilding safe and inclusive cities in the post-conflict period.
