Sustainable urban development and the restoration of the liberated territories are among Azerbaijan’s main priorities, Economy Minister Mikayil Jabbarov said during his speech at the event titled “Cities at the Center of Connectivity: Urban Reconstruction and Regional Cooperation” held within the framework of the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13), APA reports.

Speaking about sustainable urban development, regional integration and the future of the digital economy, the minister particularly emphasized that one of the main priorities of Azerbaijan’s urban planning policy is the restoration of the liberated territories.

Mikayil Jabbarov stated that through the large-scale reconstruction program implemented in recent years, Azerbaijan is paying special attention to the construction of modern cities and villages in the liberated territories:

“The reconstruction process carried out in the liberated territories means not only the renewal of infrastructure, but also the creation of new economic opportunities, ensuring sustainable development and integrating the region into long-term peace.”

It was noted during the speech that the projects implemented in the economic regions of Karabakh and Eastern Zangezur are being formed on the basis of the “smart city,” “smart village” and “green energy” concepts.

“We are applying modern urban planning standards in the liberated territories. These territories are becoming exemplary regions reflecting the sustainable development model of the future.”

The minister also touched upon the role of the cities of Baku and Sumgayit in the country’s economy, stating that these cities together form Azerbaijan’s main economic center.

At the same time, it was noted that the cities of Baku and Sumgayit provide a significant part of the country’s GDP and occupy a special place in urban development strategies.

According to Mikayil Jabbarov, the future development of cities is connected not only with infrastructure, but also with digital transformation, the service sector and international cooperation.

At the end of his speech, the minister emphasized that the main goal of Azerbaijan’s urban planning policy is inclusive development, regional integration and the full integration of the liberated territories into the country’s overall economic system.
