The construction sector is responsible for approximately 37 percent of global CO2 emissions and 28 percent of energy consumption, Giorgia Rambelli, director of the Urban Transitions Mission organization, said during the event titled “Reducing carbon emissions in housing and buildings within the urban-industry-climate nexus” held within the framework of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) in Baku, APA reports.

She noted that the housing sector and the construction sector are at the center of both urban climate problems and the global development agenda. According to her, the building and construction sector is responsible for approximately 37 percent of global CO2 emissions and 28 percent of energy consumption.

Giorgia Rambelli stressed that this sector also accounts for approximately 50 percent of material extraction worldwide and is the industry with the largest material footprint on the planet.

She stated that 14,000 communities worldwide have already joined the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy and have committed to reducing emissions and implementing adaptation strategies for climate change.

The director added that 145 cities from 52 countries have joined the Urban Transition Mission initiative to support systemic urban transformations in order to achieve long-term net-zero emission targets.
