The World Urban Forum (WUF13) will create an important opportunity to discuss housing and urban development challenges at the global level, María Fernanda Espinosa Garcés, President of the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly and former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ecuador, during a press briefing dedicated to the Thirteenth Session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) held within the framework of the 13th Global Baku Forum, APA reports.

“Worldwide, 1.1 billion people live in slums and informal settlements, while approximately 300 million people are homeless. These figures show the importance of better policies, greater investments, and strong political will,” Espinosa noted.

According to her, urban planning and housing policy are closely linked to climate action, which further increases the significance of the event.

Espinosa noted that the continuity between these processes is particularly evident in connection with COP29 held in Baku. “The World Urban Forum is a platform where leaders, experts, and representatives of the UN system come together to discuss solutions in the areas of policy, investment, and urban planning to address the housing crisis,” she emphasized.

According to the former foreign minister, Azerbaijan’s hospitality, organizational capabilities, and rich historical and cultural heritage will contribute to the successful holding of the forum.

She added that the discussions held within the framework of WUF13 will also contribute to the 10-year review process of the New Urban Agenda adopted in 2016.
