During the Leaders’ Session held within the framework of the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) in Baku, Bulgarian President Iliyana Yotova thanked President Ilham Aliyev for turning Baku into a place where the world speaks about its future, APA reports.
“I thank the Republic of Azerbaijan and President Ilham Aliyev for turning Baku into a place where the world speaks about its future,” Iliyana Yotova noted.
“The theme that has brought us together here — ‘Housing the World’ — is in fact a topic that underlies all other issues. Behind this topic are not statistical indicators, but people. Today, around 2.8 billion people worldwide do not have housing that meets standards of human dignity. More than 1 billion people live in informal settlements. And by the end of this decade alone, one housing unit must be built every second around the world in order to meet global needs. Access to housing is not merely a market issue, it is a matter of justice. A home is not just property, it is the beginning of everything. Without it, stable employment, education for children, healthcare systems and citizens who consider themselves part of society are impossible. When a city loses its ability to provide shelter for its people, it loses not only its buildings, but also its meaning,” Iliyana Yotova said.
