The holding of “World Urban Forum 13” in Baku is a strategically very important event in Azerbaijan’s urban planning policy, architect and researcher Aysel Huseynova told APA.

She stated that this forum not only strengthens the country’s active participation in the international urban development agenda, but also turns Baku into a global discussion platform: “This also means an opportunity for Azerbaijan to share its experience in sustainable urban development, adaptation to climate change, and innovative urban solutions, as well as to establish new partnerships. As one of the main platforms influencing global urban planning policies, WUF13 brings together experts, policymakers, and researchers from different countries, creating conditions for the formation of multidisciplinary approaches to urban problems. The ideas discussed within this forum determine the direction of future urban strategies and guide cities toward more inclusive, sustainable, and resilient development.”

WUF13 and Baku’s architectural approaches

Among the architectural approaches that Baku aims to highlight through this forum are context-sensitive design, modern interpretation of cultural heritage, and a human-centered approach in the urban environment. At the same time, issues such as the quality of public spaces, urban ambiance, and phenomenological experience will also be in focus. The role of architects in the cities of the future is no longer limited to creating form, but is transforming into a strategic actor integrating social, ecological, and technological processes.

Liberated territories in the context of WUF13: a new urban model

The architect emphasized that the liberated territories today serve as a unique urban laboratory for the country: “There is an opportunity to plan cities and settlements from scratch in these territories, which creates conditions for the application of innovative, sustainable, and forward-looking models. The ‘smart city’ approaches, green infrastructure, energy efficiency, and integration of digital technologies discussed within the framework of WUF13 can directly influence the projects implemented in these areas. At the same time, the forum creates opportunities for Azerbaijan to present its concepts such as ‘smart village,’ ecological balance, and restoration of cultural heritage to a global audience, as well as to expand international cooperation and investment opportunities.”
