African countries need more financial resources to eliminate infrastructure shortages amid rapid urbanization, Angola’s Minister of Public Works, Urbanism and Housing Carlos Santos said in a statement to APA-Economics during the World Urban Forum (WUF13) held in Baku.

The minister said the forum was organized at a very high level and highly appreciated Azerbaijan’s efforts in hosting the event.

“The organization of this forum is excellent. The agenda, discussions, and overall organization are at a very high level. I congratulate Azerbaijan on successfully hosting this important event,” Carlos dos Santos noted.

According to him, the urban population in Africa is growing rapidly, but serious infrastructure shortages remain, especially in urban areas.

“We have ideas, but we need more action and financial support. Additional financial resources should be allocated to African countries in order to achieve the goals envisaged in the New Urban Agenda,” the minister stressed.

Carlos Santos noted that the oil sector plays an important role in the economies of both Azerbaijan and Angola. According to him, this similarity creates additional opportunities for cooperation between the two countries.

The minister said there is also broad potential for cooperation in tourism, and the parties may sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in these areas in the future.

“Azerbaijan and Angola have many similarities. It is possible to develop cooperation in tourism and other sectors in the short, medium, and long term,” Carlos dos Santos added.
