Recent studies conducted by ICESCO show that a large portion of the world’s endangered cultural heritage sites are located in the Islamic world, Anar Karimov, Head of the Partnerships and International Cooperation Sector of ICESCO, said during the panel session titled “Sustainable and Empowering Cultural Revitalization," APA reports.

He emphasized that placing culture at the center of restoration and reconstruction processes is one of the key conditions for the sustainable development of post-conflict areas. According to him, 33 out of the 36 heritage sites currently under threat worldwide belong to Islamic countries, which accounts for approximately 60 percent of the total and represents a worrying tendency.

Anar Karimov noted that this situation necessitates more active international cooperation and preventive measures aimed at protecting heritage sites.

“Currently, 840 heritage examples are registered on ICESCO’s tangible and intangible cultural heritage lists. During the session held this year in Samarkand, 117 new cultural heritage elements from 16 countries were added to the list. The declaration of Shusha as the Cultural Capital of the Islamic World for 2024 is also one of the important steps toward preserving and promoting cultural heritage at the international level,” he emphasized.
