It is reported that the H5N6 virus first emerged in April 2014 in China. Since then, the Lao People's Democratic Republic and Viet Nam have also detected the H5N6 virus in poultry. Although the virus has not yet reported in humans, FAO says it represents a threat to the economy and livestock of the region: “It’s critical for countries in Southeast and East Asia, especially those with links to poultry production and trade. In China, for instance, poultry is kept by not only different families, but also small and large commercial farms. Therefore, consequence can be much more hazardous”.
FAO has urged Southeast and East Asian countries to ramp up efforts to detect and report influenza viruses in poultry and monitor for any human infections.
