Baku. Konul Kamilgizi - APA. Seismic activity is observed in Azerbaijan. Gurban Yetirmishli, Director General of the Republic Seismological Service Center under Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, told APA that more than 500 quakes hit the country in the past 2 months. He said some of the earthquake shocks were felt, most of them were not. He underlined that quakes of more than 5 magnitude give ground to say there has been activity since the beginning of the year.

“Seismic network system has been established widely, we can follow all the processes – quakes, activity, geodynamic processes in the country,” he said.

Yetirmishli said the major seismic activity in the country is observed in the center and northern part of the Caspian Sea, south-east slope of the Greater Caucasus – Shamakhi Ismayilli seismogenic zone. According to Director General, seismic activity started in Gabala, deep faults of the Western Caspian and Elet towards the south caused quakes in Hajigabul, Shirvan.

“The activity continues with the quakes that are not felt. Though there is strong seismic activity in the country, except for the quakes that are felt, all the other quakes are on the background level,” he said.
