Azerbaijan’s Minister of Education Mikayil Jabbarov has signed an order on making some changes to the curriculum of secondary schools for the 2016/2017 academic year.
The changes will be made in the second half of the 2016/2017 academic year.
The changes are aimed at elimination of the factors that complicate the process of learning in secondary schools, optimum regulation of student’s weekly training load and improvement of effectives of the five-day school week.
According to the changes, “Life skills-based education" courses, which are organized at the expense of hours allocated for extracurricular, optional, individual and group classes, will be suspended.
Starting from the second half of the 2016/2017 academic year, 1 hour will be allocated for extracurricular activities of I-VII graders and 2 hours for those of VIII-IX graders.
According to the amendment made to the “Model Charter of secondary school”, the classes in the secondary schools will begin on September 15 and en on June 14. The school year is divided into two semesters; the first half will cover the period from September 15 to January 26 and the second half of the year – from February 1 to June 14. Holidays during the school year; autumn holidays – 5 days (November 16-20), winter holidays – 5 days (January 27-31) and for first graders an extra 5-day spring holiday (May 1-5).
