Today marks the anniversary of the liberation of Gubadli city from occupation, APA reports.

As a result of combat operations carried out during the counter-offensive launched by the Azerbaijani Army on September 27, 2020, the city of Gubadli was liberated from Armenian occupation on October 25, 2020.

During the Second Karabakh War, the crushing blow dealt to enemy forces in the eastern Jabrayil district and the successful operations conducted in the southern Zangilan district enabled Azerbaijani Armed Forces units to advance to the administrative borders of Gubadli district.

On October 26, in his address to the people, the head of state announced the destroyed and captured weapons and equipment of the enemy during the nearly one-month-long Patriotic War, at the same time, he declared that, on October 25, the Azerbaijani Army had liberated the city of Gubadli, along with the villages of Padar, Afandilar, Yusifbayli, Chaytumas, Khanlig, Sariyatag, Mollaburhan in the Gubadli district; the villages of Birinci Alibayli, Ikinci Alibayli, Raband, Yenikand in the Zangilan district; and the villages of Govshudlu, Sofulu, Dag Mashanli, Kurdlar, Hovuslu, and Chalabilar in the Jabrayil district from occupation.

Fierce battles took place for the liberation of Gubadli city. The Azerbaijani Army broke the enemy’s resistance, forced them to retreat, and inflicted heavy losses. During the Gubadli operation, a large number of Armenian troops and military equipment were destroyed.

The “For the Liberation of Gubadli” Medal was established in the Republic of Azerbaijan. By the decree of President Ilham Aliyev, servicemen who took part in the military operations for the liberation of Gubadli district and demonstrated personal courage and heroism were awarded this medal.

According to the decree signed by President Ilham Aliyev, October 25 was designated as Gubadli City Day.

Note that Gubadli was occupied by Armenian Armed Forces on August 31, 1993. During the occupation, Armenians destroyed the city of Gubadli and its villages, committed acts of vandalism against religious, historical, and cultural monuments, cemeteries, and also inflicted ecological damage on the region’s rich nature, flora, and fauna by cutting down and burning forests and rare plant species.
