Azerbaijan to review minimum wage amount at least once a year

The minimum wage in Azerbaijan will be reviewed at least once a year, APA reports.

This is reflected in a proposed amendment to the Labor Code that was discussed today at a meeting of the Milli Majlis Committee on Labor and Social Policy.

Under the draft, the amount of the minimum wage will be reviewed no less than once a year by the body (institution) designated by the relevant executive authority, based on proposals submitted by the body (institution) determined by the relevant executive authority.

It was noted that the regulation of the minimum wage, which ensures the minimum living standard of workers and is one of the social policy tools used worldwide today, is among the issues addressed and closely monitored by many international organizations, particularly the International Labour Organization. In this regard, the World Bank Group’s “Business Ready” report classifies the absence of a legal requirement for the periodic update of the minimum wage as a score-losing criterion. Taking the abovementioned into account, a draft law arising from the need to amend the Labor Code has been prepared in order to ensure the implementation of the measure titled “Conducting legislative reforms in the field of labor relations and employment” related to the “Labor force” indicator of the World Bank Group’s “Business Ready” report, approved on February 19, 2025, by the Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Chair of the Commission on Business Environment and International Ratings.

The adoption of the draft law will ensure the periodic determination of the minimum wage, which is considered an effective social protection tool in the country, and will eliminate the reason for the country’s loss of points related to the issue noted in the report.
