Baku. Elnur Mammadli–APA. English book for the first form published in 2008/2009 academic year has some problems. Parents of the first grade pupils told APA that this book was very hard for the children. They said there were poems and texts in English in the first lessons, which were difficult for the pupils, who did not know English alphabet yet. Editor of the English book 1, rector of the University of Foreign Languages Samad Seyidov told APA that every book was published after the expert opinions. “This question has a methodical character and we have to discuss it with the experts. It cannot be explained in an interview”.
Member of the parliamentary commission of education and sciences Abel Maharramov told APA that it is not correct to give poems and texts to the children who don’t know the alphabet yet. He said this issue was discussed at the Ministry of Education for many times. “Formerly the foreign languages’ learning system based on the grammar mostly and idiomatic language had less importance. A new model using now prefers the idiomatic language than grammar. Probably the book follows this principle encouraging the children with poems and then teaching them to alphabet and grammar”.
Official of the Ministry of Education Ilham Pirmammadov noted that the program aims to give to the children preliminary information about the English. “The book is not referring to the alphabet yet. This issue was discussed and disputed for many times. We know that it is impossible to teach poems without alphabet knowledge, but this book is teaching by the pictures mostly. This experience is used in all countries. The teacher reads the poem and explains it, but the children don’t read it. It gives information about the English and teaches the children to pronounce correctly”.
