Conference â€œThe role of mass media in prevention of drug abuseâ€ held in Baku

APA reports that the conference was organized by South Caucasus Anti-Drug Programme (SCAD) of UN, State Commission Combating Drug Abuse and Illicit Drug Turnover, Youth and Sport Ministry and National Television and Radio Council. Head of SCAD programme on Azerbaijan Mazahir Efendiyev said that June 26 is observed as the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking and various measures are taken in connection with this in Azerbaijan, too. Mazahir Efendiyev said Azerbaijan actively participated in the fight against narcomania, illicit drug trafficking and added that over 200 million people suffered from drug abuse in the world. He said that this problem also caused concern in Azerbaijan. Efendiyev noted that law-enforcement bodies removed over 10 kinds of various drugs from the illicit turnover in Azerbaijan. The age for drug addicts went down to 18 in Azerbaijan. The head of the programme said that there was a need for more serious measures to prevent drug abuse. Mazahir Efendiyev noted that a competition would be announced for the best article and program to strengthen the activities for preventing drug abuse. Minister of Youth and Sport Azad Rahimov said that the number of drug addicts, who damage their life and health and create problems for themselves and the society, increases. Azad Rahimov said one of the main activities of the ministry was to promote healthy lifestyle among the youth and to take prophylactic measures and added that a number of events were held in connection with this. The minister noted that young people were very passive in the events and called on the mass media to cover more prophylactics of ill habits and drug abuse.
Head of the Working Group of the State Commission Combating Drug Abuse and Illicit Drug Turnover Araz Aliguliyev, chairman of National Television and Radio Council Nushiravan Maharramli and Richard Ives, expert of the European Union on prophylactics of drugs also addressed the conference.
