Rashad Suleymanov–APA. 1 554 974 square meters checked and cleared from mines and unexploded munitions in Azerbaijan in May 2008 4009 unexploded munitions were found and neutralized last month. 339 engineers, 5 mechanical mine-cleaner vehicles and 30 mine pickers were involved in the operations, press-service of Azerbaijan National Anti-Mine Agency told APA. So far 69 203 955 square meters have been cleaned from the mines and 310 898 mines and unexploded munitions were found and neutralized in Azerbaijan.
ANAMA conducts anti-mine operations in Tartar, Agdam, Fuzuli, Goranboy, Khojavand, Ganja and Agstafa regions.
One mine/unexploded munitions accident was identified last month. On May 19, resident of Tug Village of Khojavand Region Valiyev Ahad Yusif, 23, settled in Allahyarli Village of Beylagan Region pasturing in the Garasy territory hit anti-tank mine with his horse and lost his both legs.
According to the report of director of Azerbaijan Campaign to Ban Landmines (AzCBL) to ANAMA in May, on March 27, 2008, Private Karimov Namig Valiaga registered in the Lankaran Regional Military Commissariat hit PMN landmine during a service in the military base in Fuzuli Region and lost his leg.
According to the statistics obtained from the different sources since September 2001, 57 were killed and 136 wounded in the mine accidents in Azerbaijan.
