Baku. Lachin Sultanova, Elnur Mammadli – APA. “Azizbayov and Dzaparidze statues were dismantled due to renovation works in those areas. According to the legislation, the local monuments can be relocated”, chief of the cultural heritage department of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism Rizvan Bayramov told APA. He said the statues were saved in special depots and protected as an art work. The ministry official said dismantle of the statues was decided by the Baku City Executive Power. “The ministry experts participated in the process of movement of the statues. The statues were not damaged, destroyed or broken”.

Bayramov said the statues wouldn’t be returned to previous places. “The statues will be installed in other places of the city, but their new places have not been specified yet”.

The department chief said relocation of the statues didn’t relate to the movement of graves of 26 Baku commissars in Sahil (Seaside) Park. “This is not an action against 26s, it is only renovation works”.

Bayramov said the statues didn’t need in restoration.

He also noted that there was no need to inform the heirs of 26s about the relocation of the statues. “So far they didn’t ask us and we also didn’t ask them about something. I think there is no need to inform them because the statues are the attributes of not their families, but the city”.

Mashadi Azizbayov’s grandson Mehdi Azizbayov told APA they were not informed about the relocation of his grandfather’s statue and they failed to get some official information. Azizbayov said the statues was damaged during the dismantle. “My friend is living in nearby building. He called me in the night when he heard the vehicle’s noise. He said the statue was removed with the crane and its plinth was broken. On the next day, I went to that area and didn’t see anyone except the street cleaner there. The place of the statue was planked with flag-stones as there never was a statue”.

Mehdi Azizbayov said he was surprised to hear from media that the monument had been removed for restoration. He said there was no need for it.
“How many times can a monument be restored? The monument has recently been restored during the reconstruction in the park,” he said.

He said he would contact other members of the Azizbayovs and discuss it on May 2. Asked whether there were monuments to Mashadi Azizbayov in other places of Baku, the heir said his grandfather’s bust was in front of the police academy in Shuvalan during Soviet times.
“Later, the bust was moved to the cultural palace near Azizbayov district executive office. I will go there tomorrow to see whether it is there or not,” he said.

Mehdi Azizbayov said his grandfather was friends with Mahammad Amin Rasulzadeh, Nariman Narimanov, Jalil Mammadguluzadeh and other outstanding persons and underlined that Mirza Jalil had presented the first edition of “Molla Nasraddin” journal to Mashadi Azizbayov.

The heir added that no samples had been taken from him to identify the body dug out in Sahil park.
“No samples have been taken from me, or other heirs. I think as the investigation is expensive no one is engaged in it,” he said.

It was impossible to learn the position of Baku Mayor’s Office.
