1944 HIV/AIDS infected patients officially registered in Azerbaijan

As of the first quarter of this year, 1944 people were officially registered as HIV/AIDS infected patients in Azerbaijan. 1869 of them are citizens of Azerbaijan, 75 are foreigners. 84.3 percent of the Azerbaijani patients are men, 15.7 percent are women. 251 have died of AIDS in Azerbaijan. 129 HIV infection facts were recorded in Azerbaijan in the first quarter of the year. It was reported at the conference “Human rights and prevention of HIV/AIDS” organized by Human Rights Commissioner and United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime’s Regional Office for Central Asia, APA reports. Human Rights Commissioner Elmira Suleymanova said the number of HIV-infected people had increased recently. She said as the children born to HIV positive women were infected with that virus, the disease was recorded in kindergartens and schools.

Regional coordinator of the UN Office on Drugs and Crimes Nina Karimi said millions of people suffered drug addiction in the world. Karimi said more efficient measures should be taken in combating drug addiction and added that the world states were responsible for organizing examination and treatment of those people.

Chairman of the parliament’s standing commission on social policy Hadi Rajabli said the law on “Preventing the spread of disease caused by immunodeficiency” would be amended.
