A man has been detained on suspicion of murdering two people and setting fire to their home in an attempt to cover up the crime in Azerbaijan's Tartar district, APA reports, citing the Press Service of the Prosecutor General's Office.
According to the statement, a comprehensive investigation and operational search measures carried out in connection with a fire at a private house in Tartar revealed that the incident was in fact a serious crime involving the intentional killing of two people. Investigators established that the house had been deliberately set on fire to conceal the crime, that the elderly couple living there had been murdered, and that a large amount of cash had been stolen.
The fire was reported on August 6, 2026, at a private residence located at 38 Nariman Narimanov Street in Tartar city.
Firefighters from the State Fire Protection Service of the Ministry of Emergency Situations were dispatched to the scene and extinguished the blaze. After the fire was brought under control, the bodies of the residents, 85-year-old Asgar Samedov and his wife, 72-year-old Adila Huseynova, were discovered inside the house.
A criminal case was initially opened by the Tartar District Prosecutor's Office, and a pre-trial investigation was launched.
To determine the exact circumstances of the incident, including the cause of death and the origin of the fire, prosecutors from the Criminalistics and Information Technologies Department of the Prosecutor General's Office, investigators from the Operational Investigation Department of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, officers of the Tartar District Prosecutor's Office and District Police Department, as well as experts from the Ministry of Justice's Forensic Examination Center, carried out extensive investigative and operational measures.
Investigators examined the scene, collected physical evidence, ordered forensic examinations, questioned numerous witnesses, and analyzed all available information.
The evidence gathered established that the fire was not accidental but had been intentionally started in connection with a double murder.
The investigation found reasonable grounds to suspect that Vugar Bakhshaliyev stole a large amount of cash from the house on August 6 and then deliberately killed Asgar Samedov and Adila Huseynova before setting the house on fire to conceal the theft.
Earlier reports said that approximately 17,000 manats had been stolen from the house. The suspect, Vugar Bakhshaliyev, has reportedly been convicted multiple times in the past.
Based on the evidence collected, Bakhshaliyev has been charged under Articles 120.2.4 (murder committed by a generally dangerous method), 120.2.5 (murder for mercenary motives), 120.2.6 (murder to conceal another crime), and 120.2.7 (murder of two persons) of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan. He has been detained by the prosecutor's office as a suspect.
The criminal investigation is currently being conducted by the Criminalistics and Information Technologies Department of the Prosecutor General's Office.
Investigative authorities are continuing to establish all circumstances of the crime, including the motives, contributing factors, and any other relevant details, and to provide a full legal assessment of the case.
