“A criminal case has been opened at the Prosecutor General’s Office regarding the crash of an AZAL plane on December 25, 2024,” said Nemat Avazov, head of the Investigation Department of the Prosecutor General’s Office, at a briefing held by the Prosecutor General’s Office concerning the torture and intentional killing of Azerbaijani citizens in the Russian Federation, APA reports.
He noted that numerous expert examinations have been conducted in Russia, Kazakhstan, and Azerbaijan regarding this matter: “Our joint efforts continue, and our staff have been sent to Kazakhstan. We hope that the results of the examinations they are conducting will be known soon.”
Note that on December 25, 2024, a plane flying from Baku to Grozny crashed near the city of Aktau in Kazakhstan. According to the preliminary report released by the Kazakh side regarding the crash, the plane lost control and crashed after being damaged by ground fire near the city of Grozny. The Russian side also announced that it has formed an investigative team regarding the incident. However, there is no information about the results of the investigation.
There were 62 passengers and 5 crew members on the crashed plane, and 29 people survived. By the order of the President of Azerbaijan, two pilots and one flight navigator from the crew who showed heroism during the crash were posthumously awarded the title of National Hero of Azerbaijan, and two flight navigators were awarded the Bravery (Rashadat) Order.
