Person arrested for spying for a foreign country sentenced in Nakhchivan

The court investigation in the criminal case initiated by the State Security Service (SSS) against Siyafat Farzaliyev, who was accused of treason and illegal possession of firearm components, has been completed, APA reports.

A verdict was announced in the criminal case reviewed under the chairmanship of Judge Faig Heydarov at the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic Court for Grave Crimes. Under the verdict, the defendant, Siyafat Farzaliyev, was sentenced to 15 years and 6 months of imprisonment.

According to the charges, Siyafat Heydar oglu Farzaliyev, who had been recruited into secret cooperation by representatives of a foreign intelligence service in exchange for material benefits, deliberately carried out espionage activities on their instructions against the sovereignty, territorial integrity, state security and defense capability of the Republic of Azerbaijan, thereby committing treason. In addition, he intentionally acquired, carried and stored firearm components illegally.

He was detained as a result of operational-search measures carried out by the State Security Service and brought under investigation.

The defendant, Siyafat Farzaliyev, was charged under Articles 228.1 (illegal acquisition, transfer, sale, storage, transportation or carrying of firearms, their components, ammunition, explosives and devices) and 274 (treason) of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
